Onion Bacon Barbecue Sauce

An awesome sauce that combines sweet onion and savoury bacon, this sauce is great on pork or chicken.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Course: Sauce
Cuisine: BBQ

Ingredients

  • 3-4 slices bacon
  • 1/2 large sweet onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp hot sauce spice to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 skillet or griddle
  • 1 sauce pan, medium

Method

  1. Cook bacon to desired level of doneness on griddle or skillet.
  2. Remove bacon and cook onion in bacon grease at medium heat until translucent. Remove onion and cook garlic for roughly one minute (basically until you can smell garlic).
  3. In medium sauce pan on medium heat, combine ketchup, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Stir to combine.
  4. When sauce is simmering, add crumbled bacon, onion, and garlic. Simmer for another two minutes and then remove from heat.

Notes

  • I prefer the bacon to have a bit of chew, as I don’t necessarily want my barbecue sauce to be crunchy.  This is a matter of personal preference.
  • I prefer sweet onions in this sauce because they pair so well with the other ingredients.  Feel free to spice it up if you’d prefer.
